Nach heftigen Kämpfen mit Reichswehreinheiten und mit der Sicherheitspolizei beherrschte die Rote Ruhr Armee das rheinisch-westfälische Industrierevier. Am 2. April entsandte die sozialdemokratische (SPD) Regierung Truppen der Reichswehr zur Niederschlagung des Arbeiteraufstands und das, obwohl sich in diesen Einheiten genau jene protofaschistischen Kräfte befanden, die nur wenige Tage zuvor den rechtsextremen Putsch gegen die SPD unterstützt und daran teilgenommen hatten. Mindestens 1.000 Teilnehmer des Aufstands wurden bis zum Ende der Kämpfe am 12. April massakriert. Dabei kam es auch zu massenhaften standrechtlichen Erschießungen unter Anwendung gezielter psychischer Folter. Diese Praktiken, bei denen die Opfer ihr eigenes Grab schaufeln mussten, machten dem Historiker Klaus Gietinger zufolge Schule und gehörten u.a. gut 21 Jahre später beim Massenmord an der jüdischen Bevölkerung beim Ostfeldzug der deutschen Wehrmacht zum Repertoire von Polizei, SS, SD, Einsatzgruppen und Wehrmacht.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eDie Rote Ruhr Armee war dezentral über in zahlreichen Ruhrstädten gebildete voneinander unabhängige Vollzugsräte organisiert. It was the last revolutionary mass movement in Germany to date, comprising around 50,000 armed workers. On 2 April, the Social Democratic (SPD) government dispatched Reichswehr troops to suppress the workers' uprising — despite these units containing the very same proto-fascist forces who, just days earlier, had supported and participated in the far-right putsch against the SPD. At least 1,000 uprising participants were massacred before the fighting ended on 12 April. This included mass summary executions carried out with deliberate psychological torture.
