It was being used in print for the first time in July 1777, which from then on became one of the most important words in the international working class vocabulary. By the late 16th century the word “scab” had come to be used as an English insult, somewhat akin to “lowlife” or “scoundrel”. But at some point it began to be used by workers in industrial disputes as a label for workers who crossed picket lines and worked while their colleagues were striking for better pay or conditions. November 1918, wenige Tage nach dem Wilhelmshavener Aufstand, bei dem sich deutsche Matrosen weigerten, eine selbstmörderische Offensive gegen die Briten zu starten, marschierten Tausende von Matrosen und zivilen Unterstützer*innen in Kiel auf ein Militärgefängnis zu, in dem Meuterer festgehalten wurden. Polizei und Soldaten stellten sich den Demonstranten entgegen und eröffneten das Feuer, wobei mindestens neun Menschen getötet und viele weitere verletzt wurden. Der Vorfall markierte den Beginn des sogenannten Kieler Matrosenaufstands. Am folgenden Tag schlossen sich Tausende weitere Matrosen den Demonstrationen an und die Arbeiter in der Stadt streikten. Der örtliche Admiral, der sich der Loyalität seiner eigenen Truppen nicht sicher war, erklärte sich bereit, die inhaftierten Meuterer freizulassen. Im Folgenden breitete sich die Rebellion von Kiel aus und die sogenannte deutsche Novemberrevolution nahm Fahrt auf. Bereits am 4. November trafen in Berlin die ersten Matrosen aus Kiel ein, um den Aufstand gegen Kaiser Wilhelm II. und den Krieg in die Hauptstadt zu bringen. Indes war Kiel unter der Kontrolle von 40.000 Seeleuten und Arbeitern. Gustav Noske, eine führende Figur der SPD, wurde von Prinz Max nach Kiel geschickt, um Ruhe und Ordnung wiederherzustellen. Leider wählten ihn die jahrelang im Gehorsam gegenüber Partei- und Gewerkschaftsfunktionären geschulten Matrosen und Arbeiter zum Vorsitzenden des Kieler Arbeiter- und Soldatenrates, ohne zu ahnen, dass sie einen großen Fehler machten. Der Mann, dem sie vertrauten, schrieb später an diesem Tag in sein Tagebuch: „Ich bin im Herzen der Meuterei, die ich verurteile und beenden will“.\\n\\nDie Zeichnung stammt dieses Mal von Henry vom Eisenhüttenstädter DIY-Label Steeltown Records. Henrys Entwurf ehrt die mutigen Seeleute und Arbeiter, die 1918 in Kiel gemeinsam gegen Krieg und Kaiser rebellierten. Das Schiff in der Zeichnung trägt den Namen „Mutiny“, englisch für Meuterei bzw. Aufstand. Das in der weißen Version darauf gesprühte rote Herz symbolisiert Anerkennung und Respekt für den Mut der Seeleute und Arbeiter von damals. Etwas subtiler nimmt dieses “Herz für Meuterei” auch Gustav Noskes Negativdarstellung Kiels als „Herz der Meuterei“ aufs Korn. Wegen der fehlenden Unterstützung wandten sich die Arbeiterinnen stattdessen an die radikalere Gewerkschaft Industrial Workers of the World. Two days earlier, on 12 March, factory owners gave in to most of the demands of the 20,000 striking women and girls. The walkout, initiated by Polish women workers, was denounced by the American Federation of Labour as too “revolutionary” and “anarchist”. Because of the lack of support, the women workers turned instead to the more radical Industrial Workers of the World union. The name of the strike refers on the one hand to the satisfaction of basic needs like bread and on the other hand to the beautiful things in life, symbolised by roses. Both are worth fighting for. In a song that was sung at the protests, it says “yes, it is bread we fight for, but we fight for roses too”. It is worth mentioning the extremely inclusive organising work of the women workers, whose meetings were translated into almost 30 languages to enable all ethnic groups to actively participate in the strike. Zwei der größeren dieser Streiks fanden im August 1973 bei Ford in Köln und beim Automobilzulieferer Pierburg in Neuss statt. \\n\\nAls wilde Streiks werden Arbeitskämpfe bezeichnet, die unmittelbar von der Belegschaft ausgehen und ohne den Aufruf oder die vorherige Zustimmung durch die für den Betrieb zuständigen gewerkschaftlichen Funktionäre durchgeführt werden.
