This month’s design is inspired by Charlie Chaplin, the famous actor, filmmaker and staunch critic of capitalism, militarism and racial prejudice, who was born in April 1889.
In his film “Modern Times” Chaplin set out to describe and criticize the daily horrors of capitalist industrialization. The movie especially focuses on the psychological effects capitalism has on working individuals. Shot during the Great Depression between 1933 and 1936, the essence of the system Chaplin criticized back then hasn’t changed much until today.
Workers continue to being pushed to their mental and physical limits, the use of psychotropic drugs is ever-increasing and new digital means of control and exploitation are introduced on an ongoing basis. Ten years ago, also in April, the Rana Plaza factory collapse cost 1,138 lives and hurt at least another 2,000 because the machine had to keep running despite obvious safety issues. Preventable events like this remind us of the sad fact that we are still living in “modern times” and that they are best described as “modern crimes”.
This month’s design is offered on a white t-shirt as well as on a grey-melange hoodie.
