The September 2024 T-Shirt of the Month is called “Gudari,” which in Basque means fighter. It pays tribute to the Basques who resisted fascism during the Spanish Civil War, a conflict that shaped Spain and much of Europe for decades to come.
The Spanish Civil War and the Basque Country

The Spanish Civil War broke out in 1936 after the fascist coup led by General Franco. The Basque Country supported the Republic and became a stronghold of resistance. This stance came at a heavy price. On September 25, 1936, Bilbao and neighboring towns were heavily bombarded by Franco’s nationalist forces.
The attack was devastating and was carried out with the assistance of German allies. The very next day, the bombers returned and dropped incendiary bombs. For the civilian population, this meant widespread destruction, death, and terror. It was an ominous sign of the horrors that would later define the conflict.
The courage of the Gudariak
Those who fought back were known as Gudariak, or fighters. They defended not only their cities and communities, but also the ideals of freedom and democracy against fascism. Outnumbered and outgunned, they nevertheless resisted with extraordinary determination.
The bombing of Bilbao was part of a larger strategy designed to break morale and crush opposition. Yet instead of yielding, the attacks inspired solidarity. The Gudariak came to embody the spirit of resilience and became a lasting symbol of the Basque people’s fight for dignity.
Symbolism in the design
For this September release, dna merch collaborated with Cuero Negro, a designer based in Bilbao. His artwork is rich with symbolism that speaks directly to the history it represents.
At the center of the design is a raised fist holding a flag. On the flag, in Basque, are the words “Destroy Fascism.” The flag itself is the Ikurriña, the official Basque flag, representing identity, resistance, and self-determination.
On the helmet appears an eagle, a symbol closely associated with Franco’s dictatorship, which serves as a stark reminder of the authoritarian regime. Surrounding skulls represent death and destruction, the inevitable consequences of Franco’s rule and of fascist violence in general.
Memory and responsibility
This design is not just about visual impact. It is a piece of historical memory translated into wearable art. It reminds us that fascism is not an abstract concept but a brutal reality that inflicted suffering, devastation, and dictatorship. For the Basques, resisting Franco was a matter of survival, and the Gudariak stand as proof of the human capacity for courage in the darkest of times.
Why it matters today
Although the Spanish Civil War belongs to the past, its lessons remain relevant. Across the world, authoritarian movements and far-right ideologies are again gaining ground. Remembering the struggles of the Gudariak is a way of affirming that resistance is both possible and necessary whenever freedom and equality are under threat.
More than clothing
The September 2024 T-Shirt of the Month is more than a fashion item. It is a statement. It connects the antifascist struggles of the past with the ongoing fight for justice today. Wearing this shirt means honoring those who resisted Franco’s regime and making clear that the values they fought for are still vital.
