Why this matters now
August is the holiday season for many. But for countless workers it is a difficult time. The European steel industry, for example, is in a deep crisis and thousands of jobs are at risk. The fight for justice and workers’ rights does not take a summer break.
Our message is simple: Listen. Act. Share. Repeat.
1) Steel industry crisis - solidarity with Liberty Steel
LabourStart spoke with Judith Kirton-Darling, General Secretary of industriAll Europe, about the situation in the steel sector and specifically about Liberty Steel. She explained the background and described how workers are fighting back. On the very morning of the interview, workers launched an emergency strike at Liberty Steel’s Hungarian plant.

2) Courage at Yura in Serbia - union under attack
LabourStart also spoke with Srđan from Radnicki Glas (Workers Voice) about the extraordinary struggle of workers at the South Korean company Yura in Serbia. Yura is part of the global supply chain for the auto industry and employs thousands of workers there. The employees have shown remarkable courage while the company seems determined to break their union.
