Hoodie Katerina Gogou
Hoodie Katerina Gogou
With the Working Class History T-Shirt of the Month for June 2022, we commemorate the great Greek poet Katerina Gogou. Katerina was born on June 1, 1940 in Athens and was an important influence there, particularly on the radical political and cultural scene of the 80s in the anarchist district of Exarchia. Katerina's first years of life were riddled with hunger and Nazi occupation, resistance and civil war. Inspired by her unfinished poetic autobiography and in particular the piece “Civil War” contained therein, the June design reflects a childhood memory of Katerina. The part of the poem on which the design is based relates to the encounter with a resistance fighter and reads as follows:
"I saw through the glass a bullet hit my left palm, blood and garbage breathing. My mother was in the kitchen and my father. I don't even know where, I open the door and go to the trash. And then I saw, and I won't give a cent if you don't believe me, the most beautiful boy I've ever seen in my life. He was covered there, holding a machine gun in his hand, he had a short blonde beard and long blonde hair. His eyes... I don't know what color they are. He looked or was the Christ. 'Go, little girl, go,' he said to me, 'away from here.' They will kill me. I took a deep breath to run quickly. 'Bend over so I can kiss you,' he said to me. I was already home. The first man and the last man I ever loved was an urban guerrilla."
The design was realised by the Italian illustrator Anna Piera Di Silvestre, who lives in Berlin.
