Hoodie War and Peace (Leo Tolstoy)
In September 1828, the legendary author and Christian anarchist Leo Tolstoy was born in the Russian province of Tula. His greatest work, "War and Peace," was the inspiration for the September 2022 monthly shirt. It was this book by Tolstoy, our cooperation partners from Working Class History told us, that first brought them into contact with an alternative concept of history at a young age. Tolstoy understood history as the result of the overlapping and mutually influencing lives and actions of millions of ordinary people.
Tattoo artist Nastia Jakovleva, who was born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) and lives in Berlin, has placed the love of Andrei Nikolaevich and Natascha Rostova at the center of her drawing. Andrei and Natascha are two of the main protagonists of “War and Peace”. The drawing shows them at their first dance at the New Year's Eve ball in 1809. While the dancing couple stands for peace, the background symbolizes the horrors of war. Another highlight of the drawing is the following quote from Andrei:
“Everything I know, I know because of love.”
