Hoodie Mayan Resistance 1517

Our February 2022 motif was designed by the US-based Mexican artist Julio Mendoza and is a tribute to the resistance of the indigenous Maya people against Spanish colonialism in February 1517. The back features a Mayan warrior wearing a jaguar helmet. For the Maya, the jaguar was a symbol of power, wildness and bravery, an embodiment of aggressiveness in a positive sense. The Mayan word muuk' means fuerza in Spanish or strength or power in German. The front of the shirt features a corn cob in the shape of an arrow, which is an allusion to the famous Mayan leader Nachán Can. When the Spanish invaders sent a messenger to demand tribute from Nachán Can, he is said to have replied that the only tribute he would give the Spaniards were turkeys in the shape of spears and corn in the shape of arrows. The corn cob or arrow refers to the year of the battle against Hernandez de Cordova, who set out from Cuba to Mexico in February 1517 to enslave indigenous peoples. However, he was defeated by Mayan fighters and forced to retreat, where he died of his wounds soon afterwards.
