The Working Class History T-shirt of the Month for May 2025 is dedicated to around 200 suffragettes who, on 21 May 1914, descended on Buckingham Palace to present a petition to the king demanding votes for women, after he had refused to meet with them. Instead of the king, however, they encountered 2000 police with batons and horses upon their arrival. The women attempted to push their way through to reach the palace. The Lahore Civil & Military Gazette reported the following on the incidence:

"Finding the gates closed, they hurled themselves against the ironwork, urged on by an infuriated clergyman in his shirt-sleeves. A gate was opened to allow three or four mounted police to pass out, and the women then became half-demented in their efforts to pass in. A few men joined in the struggle. One man seized the bridle of a horse and the constable riding the animal drew his baton and struck him with some severity on the arm and shoulder."

Around 60 women and two men were arrested, most of whom were later imprisoned for sentences of between two weeks and three months.

Earlier that month, two suffragettes had thrown stones through the palace's windows, wrapped with messages including:

“Constitutional methods being ignored drive us to window smashing", and “If a constitutional deputation is refused, we must present a stone message”.

We are happy to include yet another beautifully drawn design by Berlin based tattoo artist Nora Lehrmann, who also did the design for March 2022 dedicated to the famous Bread and Roses Strike.
