T-Shirt Women Modern Times (Charlie Chaplin)

The April 2023 design is inspired by Charlie Chaplin. Born on April 16, 1889, Chaplin was an actor, filmmaker, and staunch critic of capitalism, militarism, and racism. In his film Modern Times, he set out to comically portray the daily horrors of capitalist industrialization. The film focuses particularly on the psychological effects that capitalism has on dependent employees. Shot during the Great Depression between 1933 and 1936, the essence of the system Chaplin criticized at the time has not changed much to this day. Working people continue to be pushed to their psychological and physical limits, the use of psychotropic drugs is steadily increasing, and new digital control and exploitation mechanisms are constantly being introduced. In 2013, also in April, the collapse of the Rana Plaza factory claimed 1,138 lives and at least 2,000 others were injured. All because the machine was not allowed to stop despite obvious safety problems. Preventable events like this remind us of the sad fact that we still live in "modern times" and that these are best described as "modern crimes". This month's T-shirt takes this up by changing the "Times" in the original title to "Crimes".
