The July 2023 design is inspired by July 19, 1936 and the events that followed. In response to the coup by right-wing General Francisco Franco, workers across Spain took up arms and launched one of the most far-reaching social revolutions in history to date. A civil war ensued, pitting workers against Spanish capitalists and power elites supported by Nazi Germany and fascist Italy. In the revolutionary areas, anarchist and socialist workers and peasants took over jobs and lands and began to manage them collectively. Thousands of people from all over the world came to the country to support the Spanish revolution. One of them was the famous British socialist writer George Orwell, who described the situation in Barcelona as follows:

“It was the first time I had been in a city where the working class was in the saddle.”

The Western democracies, including Britain and France, abandoned the Spanish Republic after Franco's coup and imposed a blockade on Spain, effectively stopping the flow of aid and weapons to the anti-fascists. Italy and Germany ignored the blockade and openly continued to support Franco's forces. The US oil giant Texaco even supplied the Nationalists with oil and other goods without asking for any payment, while stopping all deliveries to the Republic and its defenders. After almost three years of bitter and bloody war, the Nationalists, with their superior weapons and equipment, were finally victorious.

The July 2023 design is by tattoo artist Ysabel Shrapnel. Ysa was inspired by the style of leaflets and posters of the time. "No Pasarán" is a famous anti-fascist slogan that emerged during the Spanish Civil War and is still used today in the context of resistance to right-wing violence and politics. It literally means: "They [i.e. the fascists] will not get through". The sleeve of the woman depicted also features the logos or abbreviations of the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT) and the Federación Anarquista Ibérica (FAI). These are two trade union associations that played a significant role in the Spanish Revolution.
