T-Shirts Unisex Bossnapping (Amiens 2014)
The January 2024 design pays tribute to workers at the Goodyear plant in Amiens, France. When the US headquartered tire and rubber company’s plant faced closure, the workers demanded better severance pay. Over 100 workers occupied the plant and barricaded managers inside for 30 hours, until the company agreed to triple the proposed redundancy pay from an original offer averaging €20,000 per employee. France has a long history of ‘bossnapping’ dating back to May 1968 when executives were held hostage in the struggle for rights. The courts have tended to treat the cases relatively leniently. However, in 2016 and unprecedented in France, eight of the participating workers received heavy sentences in the form of two years’ prison with 15 months suspended. The CGT union, whose members were on trial, said the verdict was unacceptable and claimed the government was seeking to “intimidate all workers who are fighting for their rights and their jobs”.
This month’s design “Not a Good Year for the Bosses” was created by Zagreb based Bojan Kanižaj, who amongst other things use to be the art director of ROAR magazine.
