T-Shirts Unisex Freedom (Emma Goldman)
The Working Class History T-Shirt of the Month June 2023 is dedicated to the outstanding political activist Emma Goldman. Emma Goldman was born in June 1869 in what is now Lithuania and emigrated to America at the age of 17. She was a peace activist, anti-militarist, atheist, and feminist theorist. She also played a crucial role in the development of an anarchist political philosophy in the United States and Europe in the first half of the 20th century. Contributing to her early politicization were, among other things, her experiences as a factory worker in Russia and the United States, and the execution of four anarchist union activists in the aftermath of the so-called Haymarket Riot in Chicago on May 1, 1886. The events associated with this established the tradition of the international labour movement and unions to celebrate May Day as a day of struggle for the working class. This month’s design comes with a drawing of Emma Goldman and the following quote:
“I want freedom, the right to self-expression, everybody’s right to beautiful, radiant things.”
The phrase is from her autobiography and Emma Goldman refers to it there as the following:
“Anarchism meant that to me, and I would live it in spite of the whole world — prisons, persecution, everything. Yes, even in spite of the condemnation of my own closest comrades I would live my beautiful ideal.”
The idea and realisation of this month’s design are by tattoo artist and illustrator Ysabel Shrapnel.
